Etymology
From διά ('through, apart') combined with the root of ἵστημι ('to stand') plus the result-noun suffix -μα, giving the literal sense 'a standing apart' — hence a gap, interval, or distance between two points. The word is inherited from Ancient Greek, where it already meant interval (including the musical sense). In Modern Greek it broadened to cover a period of time and, in the 20th century, 'outer space'.
