Etymology
Modern Greek μαχαίρι descends from Medieval Greek μαχαίριον, the diminutive of Ancient Greek μάχαιρα 'large knife, dagger, sabre'. By the Byzantine period this diminutive had displaced the simplex as the ordinary word for 'knife'. The deeper origin of μάχαιρα is uncertain: it was traditionally linked to μάχομαι 'to fight', but that connection is now widely doubted and a pre-Greek (loanword) source is often proposed.
