Etymology
Έξυπνος comes from Ancient Greek ἔξυπνος, a compound of the prefix ἐξ- ('out of') and ὕπνος ('sleep'), originally meaning 'roused from sleep, awake.' The modern sense 'clever, intelligent' developed metaphorically from this notion of being alert and wide-awake rather than drowsy. The 'sleep' element ὕπνος descends from Proto-Indo-European *swep- 'to sleep.'
