Etymology
From Ancient Greek ἔγκυος 'pregnant', a compound of the prefix ἐν- 'in, within' and the root κυ- 'to swell, be pregnant' (seen also in κύω 'to conceive' and κῦμα 'swell, wave'). The underlying image is of something swelling within the body. It is a direct cognate of Latin inciens 'pregnant (of animals)', both continuing an inherited Indo-European formation built on the root for 'swell'.
