The word builds on the ancient adjective έγκυος, itself from the prefix εν- (in) and the verb κύω, meaning to conceive or carry in the womb. A nominal extension in -μο- (seen also in κύμα, swell or wave) gives the adjective έγκυμος. The abstract-noun suffix -οσύνη, the same ending found in καλοσύνη (kindness) or δικαιοσύνη (justice), turns that adjective into a noun for the condition itself.
