Etymology

Περίπατος comes from the verb περιπατέω, built from the prefix περί ('around') and πατέω ('to tread, to walk'). The noun originally named both the act of walking about and the covered walkway where such strolling took place. Aristotle taught while pacing the walkway of the Lyceum, which is why his school became known as the Peripatetic school.
