Ηλεκτρισμός is built from the verb ηλεκτρίζω, to electrify, plus the noun-forming suffix -σμός. The verb itself goes back to ήλεκτρον, the ancient Greek word for amber. Amber produces a static charge when rubbed with cloth, and ancient observers of this effect gave later science its name for the whole phenomenon.
