Etymology

The word builds on ηλεκτρόνιο, the Greek term for "electron." That noun goes back to ancient ήλεκτρον, meaning amber, since amber produces static charge when rubbed. English scientists coined "electron" and "electric" from this ancient Greek word, and modern Greek later borrowed the scientific vocabulary back, adding the native adjective suffix -ικός to form ηλεκτρονικός.
