Etymology

λάμπω is an ancient Greek verb meaning to shine or gleam, already found in Homer. Its deeper origin is not settled. Beekes treats it as possibly Pre-Greek, without a secure Indo-European root. The related noun λαμπάς, meaning torch, passed through Latin and French to give English lamp.
