Etymology

Ληστής descends from ancient Greek λῃστής, an agent noun built on the verb λῃστεύω, to plunder. That verb in turn comes from λεία, meaning booty or spoils. The word has referred to an armed robber or bandit since antiquity, and it kept that sense through to modern Greek.
