Etymology

The word combines the prefix δια- (through, apart) with λέγω, an old verb that originally meant to gather or pick out before it came to mean to say. In Ancient Greek, διαλέγω kept this older sense: to sort through and pick out. Modern Greek preserves that meaning in the active voice, while the related middle form διαλέγομαι drifted toward to converse, the root of words like dialogue and dialectic.
