Etymology
In Ancient Greek, δίπλωμα meant a letter or document folded in two, from διπλόω, to fold double. That verb comes from δι-, two, plus -πλόος, fold. Latin borrowed the word as diploma for an official certificate, and English took it from Latin with the same sense. Modern Greek kept the original word for any official certificate, from a driving license to a university degree.
