Etymology
διπλός comes from ancient Greek διπλοῦς, a compound of the numeral prefix δι- (two, from δύο) and a root meaning fold, related to Greek πλέκω (to plait, weave). The same fold-root appears in Latin -plex and -plicare, seen in English words like duplicate and complex. So διπλός literally means twofold, built the same way English forms double from Latin duo plus a fold-element.
