Etymology

Κυνήγι grew out of the verb κυνηγώ, to hunt, which goes back to κυνηγός, a hunter. That word is a compound of κύων, dog, and ἄγω, to lead, so a κυνηγός was literally someone who leads dogs. The modern noun dropped the verb ending and kept a plain neuter form for the activity itself.
