Χρωστάω is a contracted form of the older χρεωστώ, built on χρέος, meaning debt or need. Χρέος itself goes back to the ancient verb χρή, meaning it is necessary or it is fitting. Over time the noun for debt turned into a verb for owing, and everyday speech shortened χρεωστώ to χρωστάω.
