Etymology
Πιθανώς is the adverb of the adjective πιθανός, meaning probable or convincing. Πιθανός derives from the verb πείθω, to persuade, built on the aorist stem πιθ- seen in forms like ἔπιθον. The sense shifted from what persuades to what seems likely, and the adverb takes the regular -ώς ending used to turn -ος adjectives into adverbs.
