Etymology
Κώδικας comes from Latin codex, genitive codicis. The Latin word first meant a block of wood or tree trunk, then a set of wooden writing tablets bound together, and later a bound book, especially one containing laws. Greek borrowed the term through learned and legal usage and fitted it into the native -ας noun class. Its modern sense expanded to cover any organized system of rules or symbols, from law codes to computer code.
