Etymology

Greek borrowed σαμπάνια directly from French champagne, the name of the wine region east of Paris. The region's name goes back to Latin campania, meaning open countryside, from campus, field. The word entered Greek in the 19th or early 20th century along with the drink itself and took a standard Greek feminine noun ending.
