Etymology

Επίσημος comes from ancient Greek ἐπίσημος, built from the preposition ἐπί ("upon, on") and the root of σῆμα ("sign, mark"). A thing that was ἐπίσημος had a mark set upon it, which made it notable or distinguished. Over time this narrowed in modern Greek to the sense of "official" or "formal", the sense a document or event carries when it bears the recognized mark of authority.
