Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek χαρακτήρ, which named a tool for engraving or the mark it left. It derives from the verb χαράσσω, meaning to scratch or engrave. Over time the sense shifted from the physical mark to the distinguishing traits that make up a person's nature. Latin borrowed the word as character, and from there it spread into most European languages.
