Etymology

The word comes from the verb κυβερνάω/κυβερνώ, meaning to steer or pilot a ship, joined with the agent suffix -τής, meaning one who does something. Scholars do not trace κυβερνάω to a secure Indo-European root; it is often treated as a Pre-Greek word, possibly borrowed from a Semitic language. The Greek word later passed into Latin as gubernare, and from there into English as govern and, via a 20th-century coinage, cybernetics.
