Etymology
Ώς is a shortened, stressed form of έως, the standard Greek word for "until". Modern Greek keeps the accent mark on this short form on purpose, even though single-syllable words normally lose their accent in the modern spelling system. The mark exists only to separate it in writing from the unaccented word ως, which means "as" or "like" and comes from a different ancient root.
