Etymology
Θέατρο descends from Ancient Greek θέατρον, built on the verb θεάομαι, meaning to look at or behold. The suffix -τρον marked a place or instrument for doing something, so the word meant a place for viewing. Latin borrowed it as theatrum, and from there it spread into most European languages.
