Μωρό is the neuter form of the adjective μωρός, which meant dull, foolish, or without reason in ancient and later Greek. Over time speakers used the neuter form on its own as a noun for an infant, a being who cannot yet reason or speak. The same adjective μωρός gave English the word moron, borrowed directly by psychologists in the early 20th century. Beekes notes that μωρός itself has no secure Indo-European etymology and may come from a pre-Greek substrate word.
