Etymology

θεατρικός is built from θέατρον, the Greek word for theater, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning roughly "pertaining to." θέατρον itself comes from θεάομαι, "to look at, to behold," with the suffix -τρον marking a place or instrument. So θέατρον originally meant "a place for viewing" before it settled into its modern sense of theater. The deeper Indo-European root of θεάομαι is disputed among linguists, so no reconstructed root is given here.
