Etymology

Ρούμι is a direct loanword from English rum, borrowed into Greek along with the drink itself. The origin of the English word is disputed: it may come from an English dialect term rumbullion, or from a Malay or other source, and no version is firmly established. Because it entered Greek only in modern times as a borrowing, it has no inherited Greek or Indo-European root of its own.
