Etymology
Χάκερ is a direct loan from English hacker, adopted into Greek along with the personal computer and internet in the 1980s and 1990s. English hacker comes from the verb to hack, which traces to Old English haccian, meaning to cut with rough blows. Greek kept the word unchanged in spelling and pronunciation rather than translating it, as it did with many computing terms.
