Etymology

Καθιστώ descends from ancient Greek καθίστημι, a compound of the prefix κατά (down, thoroughly) and ἵστημι (to make stand, to set). The original sense was literally to make someone or something stand or sit in a fixed position, which shifted to the abstract sense of making something into a given state, or of appointing someone to a role. Modern Greek kept the formal, administrative flavor of the old verb.
