Λιώμα is built from the verb λιώνω, meaning to melt, dissolve, or mash, with the suffix -μα that turns a verb into a noun naming the result of the action. Λιώνω itself is usually traced to the ancient verb λύω, to loosen or dissolve. Over time the everyday sense of melted or crushed matter extended to people, so λιώμα also describes someone reduced to a limp, wrecked state by fatigue or drink.
