Etymology

Διώχνω grew out of the ancient verb διώκω, meaning to pursue or chase. Modern Greek reshaped many old verbs with a new ending in -ώχνω or -ώχω, and διώκω became διώχνω through this pattern, with the κ sound shifting to χ before the ν. The core sense of pursuit narrowed in everyday speech to the act of driving someone or something away.
