Etymology
Γουλιά derives from the dialectal Greek noun γούλα, meaning throat, which entered Greek from Venetian gola. Gola in turn goes back to Latin gula, throat. The suffix -ιά was added to form a noun of quantity, so γουλιά originally meant something like a throatful, the amount of liquid one swallows at once.
