Etymology

Δόση comes from ancient Greek δόσις (dosis), meaning an act of giving or a portion handed over. It derives from the verb δίδωμι (dídōmi), 'I give,' whose root traces back to Proto-Indo-European. English borrowed the word almost unchanged as 'dose,' through Latin and French, keeping the original sense of a measured amount given at one time.
