Etymology
Αστακός comes from the Ancient Greek ἀστακός, already used by classical writers for the lobster or crayfish. The root does not have a clear Indo-European derivation, and many scholars treat it as a word Greek borrowed from an older, pre-Greek Mediterranean language, much like several other Greek names for sea creatures. The form has stayed nearly unchanged from antiquity into Modern Greek.
