Ψάρι comes from the Byzantine and later Ancient Greek diminutive ὀψάριον (opsárion), meaning a small dish eaten with bread, often fish. That word derives from ὄψον (ópson), a general term for a savory side dish. Over time ὀψάριον narrowed in meaning to just fish, and lost its first syllable in everyday speech, giving modern ψάρι.
