Etymology
Υπερβολικός is built from υπερβολή, meaning excess or hyperbole, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning pertaining to. Υπερβολή itself comes from the verb υπερβάλλω, to exceed or overshoot, which joins υπέρ, over or beyond, with βάλλω, to throw. So the word's root sense is throwing past the mark. English borrowed the same Greek noun directly as hyperbole and hyperbolic.
