Etymology
Εσωτερικός is built on the adverb έσω, meaning "within" or "inside", the same base found in εἰς/ἐν ("into", "in"). A relational suffix -τερ- adds the sense "more toward", and the adjective-forming ending -ικός turns the whole thing into "pertaining to the inside". The opposite pair εξωτερικός ("external") is formed the same way from έξω, "outside".
