Etymology
τόσος is a demonstrative-correlative adjective inherited largely unchanged from Ancient Greek. It belongs to a small paradigm of quantity words built on the demonstrative stem to- plus the suffix -σος, a pattern shared with ὅσος ("as much as") and πόσος ("how much"). The same demonstrative stem underlies the Greek definite article ὁ/ἡ/τό. No further Proto-Indo-European root is securely reconstructed beyond this demonstrative base.
