Etymology
The word comes from the verb υπολογίζω, meaning to calculate or reckon, combined with the agent suffix -τής, meaning one who does something. Υπολογίζω itself joins the prefix υπό (under) with λογίζομαι (to reason, count), which traces back to λόγος (word, reckoning). The modern sense computer was adopted in the 20th century for the machine that performs calculations.
