The verb comes from Ancient Greek ὑπολογίζομαι, a compound of the prefix ὑπό (under, beneath, hence also 'secondary' or 'in addition') and λογίζομαι (to reckon, count, calculate). λογίζομαι in turn derives from λόγος (word, account, reckoning), a core Greek root tied to counting and reasoning. The prefix originally added a sense of factoring something in as a subordinate or additional consideration.
