Καταδίκη comes from the verb καταδικάζω, itself built from κατά (down, against) and δίκη (justice, a lawsuit, a judgment). The root δικ- traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to show or point out, since a judgment originally meant pointing to what is right. Over time δίκη narrowed in legal Greek to mean a trial, and καταδίκη came to mean the judgment handed down against someone.
