Etymology
Βέρα entered Greek from Venetian Italian during the long Venetian presence in the Ionian Islands and Crete. The Venetian word vera, short for fede vera or true faith, named the ring that sealed a binding promise. It traces back to Latin verus, meaning true. Modern Greek kept the word as the everyday term for a wedding ring.
