Etymology
Κίτρινος is built from κίτρον, the Greek name for the citron fruit, plus the adjective suffix -ινος, which marks material or color. The word first described the pale yellow rind of the citron and later became the general term for the color yellow. The origin of κίτρον itself is uncertain and may predate the Indo-European stock of Greek, so no secure root can be traced further back.
