Etymology
στέγη comes from Ancient Greek στέγη, tied to the verb στέγω, meaning to cover or to keep out weather. The underlying idea, covering something to protect it, goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root for covering. That root also produced Latin words for covering and roofing, which later fed into English through French and Latin borrowings.
