Etymology
τυπικός is built from τύπος, meaning type, form, or imprint, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning pertaining to. τύπος itself comes from the verb τύπτειν, to strike or beat, since a τύπος was originally the mark left by a blow, like a stamped impression. Over time the word broadened from a physical imprint to an abstract pattern or category, and τυπικός came to mean fitting that pattern, either in the sense of representative or in the sense of merely formal.
