Word family
Etymology
The noun προσευχή comes from the verb προσεύχομαι, formed from the prefix προς- (toward, in the direction of) and the verb εὔχομαι (to pray, vow, or declare solemnly). The word already meant prayer or vow in ancient Greek and carried into the New Testament and later church usage largely unchanged. The deeper origin of εὔχομαι beyond Greek is disputed among specialists, so no secure Indo-European root is given here.
