Etymology

The verb joins the prefix pros- (toward, to) with eukhomai (to vow, to utter a solemn wish). In ancient Greek eukhomai already covered both prayer and boastful declaration, since a vow spoken to a god was also a public claim. Adding pros- sharpened the sense to direct address, giving a verb that means to speak a vow or request toward a deity. Modern Greek kept this compound as the standard word for religious prayer.
