Etymology
Μαντάμ came into Greek from French madame, itself a contraction of ma dame, 'my lady'. Dame traces back to Latin domina, 'mistress of the house'. Greek borrowed the word whole, without adapting its ending, and used it to address or describe a woman seen as refined or foreign in manner. It spread widely in the 19th and 20th centuries alongside French cultural influence in Greek cities, especially for governesses and teachers of French.
