Θαυμάζω is built from the ancient noun θαῦμα, meaning wonder or marvel, plus the verb-forming suffix -άζω. The word already appears in Homer with the sense of marveling at something extraordinary. The deeper origin of θαῦμα itself is disputed: some scholars link it to θεάομαι, to gaze or behold, but others, including Beekes, treat it as possibly Pre-Greek, so no PIE root can be stated with confidence.
