Etymology

Τηλεφώνημα is a modern coinage, built to name the event of using the telephone. It comes from the verb τηλεφωνώ, 'to telephone,' which itself derives from τηλέφωνο, a 19th-century compound of τῆλε ('far off') and φωνή ('voice, sound'). The suffix -μα, added to the verb's aorist stem, forms a neuter noun naming the result of an action, so τηλεφώνημα denotes the completed act: a call placed or received, not the device itself.
