Etymology
The verb comes from μάγειρας, the Greek word for cook or chef, with the verbal suffix -εύω added to turn the noun into an action. The origin of μάγειρας itself is not settled. Some scholars link it to an old root meaning to knead, but Beekes and others argue it is a pre-Greek word borrowed from a substrate language before Greek arrived in the region. Because the earlier history is disputed, no reliable Indo-European root can be given.
